Golden Rice Bowl Edmonton, AB - Tasty 8 course traditional Chinese meal

Rating Food
For a family dinner a while ago, we went to Golden Rice Bowl for a multi-course meal. We had a 10 course meal last time we where here, but this time we were a slightly smaller group so we went with an eight course multi-course set meal instead. (Yes, we showed much restraint lol!) On to the food!!

the APPYS
The appetizer up was the Crabmeat with fish maw egg soup. Its savory and tasty with bits of soft tender fish maw (which is apparently supposed to be great for one's complextion), fresh crab leg meet chunks and tendrils of egg whites from the egg drop.

You can add in optional white pepper and/or red vinegar to add in a bit of extra flavor if you like (I added in 2 tiny drops of red vinegar)

the ENTREESThe Fresh lobster with béchamel sauce on a bed of wonton noodles was the first entree out.  Live lobster is cooked to perfection and is swaddled in an indulgent white sauce. We forgot to order a double order of wonton noodles that the lobster sits on, so it looks like we stole all of noodles to eat!

The Crispy Chicken. The set meal came with a half order of this deep fried chicken  with a golden brown crisp skin, moist succulent meat and covered in a generous amount of crisp fried garlic, green onions and sitting in a pool of sweetened soy sauce.

Our next entree was vegetables: Braised abalone strips and mushrooms on a bed of baby bok choy. It came with a generous amount of abalone strips and a mixture of shitake, straw and enoki mushrooms braised in an rich, dark albaone and oyster based sauce with plenty of sauce to go with the sauteed baby bok choy and to eat with steamed jasmine rice.

THe next entree was the Prawns, Scallops, Squid and chicken with baby Shanghai bok choy. Plenty of large shrimp, scallops, squid, chicken breast strips, mushrooms, carrots and garlic in an oyster sauce, is surrounded by a ring of sauteed baby Shanghai bok choy.

The Peach and Fried Shrimp looked like a mess, but the large prawns were surprisingly  crispy under the coat of sweetened mayo.  Its tasty, but I wish restaurants would really step up and plate this dish better.

Next up was the Pork in black pepper sauce with cashews.  Notes of freshly cracked pepper rise from the lightly glazed tender nuggets of goodness.  It was plated with some fried pepper leaves

Last but not least, was the deep fried tilapia.  We normally order it steamed, but thought we'd give this version a try.  The fresh fish is cleaned, lightly battered and popped into the fryer for a crispy crunchy coating, served on a bed of sweetened soy sauce, and topped with slivers of green onion and cilantro.

the DESSERT
After all that food, we had the dessert of the day, which happened to be Red bean dessert. A simple dessert of red beans, water, and rock sugar for a sweet finish.

the VERDICT
Overall, a great place for Chinese food, whether you're eating a little, or for a crowd!
