Korean BBQ ribs, Kal-bi Qal-bi marinade and recipe!

I know, I haven't been posting up recipes in the last little while, mainly cuz I haven't had a lot of free time to experiment in the kitchen.  So, here's a tasty Korean BBQ ribs marinade - or Qal-bi, Kal-bi.. however you want to spell it, this sweet fruit based marinade not only tenderizes but is super easy and delish!I decided to make this marinade and compare it with a standard coca-cola one.  And yeah, there was no competition.

The Coca-cola marinade consisted of dumping in a liter of pop, then smearing the ribs with Bulls-eye BBQ sauce.  It turned out tough, pretty bland and pretty disappointing.

The Korean BBQ marinade ribs marinated for the same time (30min) and cooked for the same time in the oven.. for bite- tender, not quite fall off the bone tender and the marinade had penetrated most of the way.  You can do the ribs on a BBQ as well, but I'd keep it swimming in the marinade for a bit longer as slow cooking makes the ribs more tender, and its always fast (but tastier) on the BBQ!

Korean BBQ ribs recipe
5 pounds beef short ribs, cut flanken style or leave as nice big meaty ribs
Marinade
-1 head of garlic, ~ 6-8 cloves garlic
-1 onion, diced
-1 Asian pear, cored and cubed
-1 kiwi, ripened, peeled
-1 cup light soy sauce
-1 cup loosely packed brown sugar
-1/4 cup honey
-1/4 cup sesame oil (or peanut oil)
 How to:
1) In a food processor, add all marinade ingredients and puree until the sauce is nice and smooth
2) in a large bowl or ziplock bag, dump enough marinade to cover the ribs. Excess unused marinade can be frozen for future use.
3) Pop the ribs into fridge and marinate for 30min to overnight, let ribs come up to temperature about 30min before cooking
4) Preheat oven to 350F, roast ribs (cut flaken/thin style for 20-30 min; big meaty ribs 45min-1hr). Or grill on medium high heat for 2min/side (thin), medium low 10-15min for big meaty ribs)
5) Enjoy!!
