While we were in Vancouver for a girlfriend's wedding, we had to make a quick snack/early lunch stop at the food court upstairs in Aberdeen Mall. Wings, HK style milk tea and cream puffs!! (Not a meal you'd see on any Dietician's list, but we're on vacation!)Rating 8/10. We came for the wings!!! Their "wind and sand" wings or "foong sah" wings are delicious with a hint of ginger... but they're not as amazing as I had remembered them to be. A fellow foodie tells me the original owners sold the place and have opened up a new place... which I'm totally going to hunt down and hit up!! These wings are crispy and savory on the outside as they're seasoned very lightly with a Chinese fermented tofu paste which gives it a complex salty and savory profile before they're fried to a crispy golden perfection. If they upped the marinade ingredients, they'd have the best wings ever - just as I remembered.
Leung Kee
Rating 8/10. Second stop was at Leung Kee for some drinks. Don't get confused and go to the wrong place - this is the one with an "E" at Aberdeen Centre. There's also another drink place called Lung Kee (without the E).. the good drink place is the one with the E! A cold lemon tea with honey or "Dong Ling Cha" is on our hit list, fragrant with fresh lemon, and a Hong Kong style milk tea or "Gong sic lai cha" both items were $2 each!! The HK style milk tea is flavorful, aromatic with the strongly brewed tea used to make it, rich, creamy and strong, without being over brewed and tannin-y.
We didn't have too much space left so we picked up 2 cream puffs. We had a silky smooth matcha tea custard that was nicely flavored with green tea, but not too much to become bitter.
And a classic cream puff filled with their regular vanilla custard. Mmmm!
