The first, I mean first place we stopped at after we picked out our rental car was... yup. Krispy Kreme. My boyfriend made a beeline to it, and watched as "his" original glazed donut was made fresh off the donut-making machine. First with dough dropping into the hot oil
Getting flipped over and frying on its other side.
Excess oil dripping off while a staff grins at my camera happiness
a little waterfall of sweet sweet glaze
and fresh warm glazed donuts get a few seconds to have their glaze set before being packaged into a box or...
Into my boyfriend's tummy! Soft, warm, melt in your mouth yummy!!!
I went with a limited edition key lime pie donut. Filled with a limey custard, and topped with a tasty crumble... Mmm.
The next day, we hit up Ululani's for the best shaved ice on Maui. They have a second location just a little bit aways from their original locaation since the last time we went, so we hit it up.
First the ice is shaved and patted into shape
Multiple pokes with skewers to help the mostly organic and locally sourced fruit syrups penetrate into the centre
And loading it up with the tasty fruit based syrups
And Tah Dah! Its a deliciously cold mango (yellow) and guava(red) shaved ice! Mmmm!
At Mana Foods, a crazy supermarket and bakery that specializes in anything and everything vegan, organic and environmentally friendly.. I think the sheer variety they had would have made some of my organic-everything mom's swoon with glee lol!
We scored a tasty crisp meringue-like flour less dark chocolate and walnut cookie from Mana foods. It was super dark choclately.. and oddly very healthy at the same time as it wasn't super rich. Mmm.. first ever "healthy" chocolate cookie that tasted good!
A quintessential Hawaiian snack, we grabbed from Minit Stop - spam musubi:
Yes, its a gas station, but hey, the locals voted it the best, so we had to try it.
Finally, our favourite place to have a snack was at Huli Huli Chicken. I nearly got whiplash the first time we saw the sign on the side of the highway just as you head out of Kihei, and my boyfriend cranked a U-turn into the parking lot beside the stretch of beach where the grill was set up. They usually set up on beach on side of highway as you exit Kihei, but as they move around, just have to keep our eye out and be prepared to U turn or do multiple turns to get back to their stand
Its beach style BBQ at its best. Literally, there's a grill right on the beach, with a tent you line up to pay and pick up a cold drink and platters of the fresh chicken that's being grilled right in front of you.
You're taunted by the delicious scent of roasting chicken as you wait in line
The chicken was basted regularly with a teriyaki based glaze and turned. Huli Huli = turn turn in Hawaiian, hence Huli Huli Chicken :)
We almost couldn't wait till it got off the grill
This was probably the most moist and super tender simply made chicken we've ever had. Served with some corn and rice. We regretted only ordering a 1/4 chicken rather than a whole one as soon as we bit in. Mmmmmm!! !
All the other notable Maui places we ate at coming soon! In the meantime, happy eats!!

hey, we don't have these up here in Canada!
Probably not one in Edmonton? :) There is one in Surrey, BC. Funny story about this: People used to drive south of the border and bring back boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts. However, once it opened in Surrey, nobody cared about it anymore!
Heehee.. I didn't realize there was one in Surrey!! The one in Calgary closed a while back. its a great treat... and people always want something more when its either hard to get, or you'd have to travel a fair distance to :p
