For a family dinner in the recent past (yes, I know, I need to post these up earlier!), we went to the decadently decorated Golden Rice Bowl. The gold, red, gold and more red decor is almost overwhelming when you first walk in. We initially were going to go with one of the set meals, but some wanted fresh lobster, while others wanted fresh crab, so we eventually put together our own 10 course meal from the menu. But onto the food!
the APPYS
Since its family style where all food is served on a big platter, with a lazy susan to make life easy, the Hot and cold appetizer platter was no exception. It includes a good selection of tasty things: moist braised sliced beef flank, cooked ham, pickled jellyfish, sashimi surf clams, steamed chicken breast strips topped with a peanut satay sauce
Next appetizer was the Crabmeat with fish maw egg soup. Savory and tasty with bits of fish maw, fresh crab leg meet chunks and tendrils of egg whites from the egg drop.
the ENTREES
Our Double crab in ginger and green onions came with plenty of "crackers" and napkins. Two fresh crabs are flash fried, followed by getting infused with ginger and green onions.. mmmm!
THe next entree was the Prawns, Scallops and Squid in bird's nest. Plenty of large shrimp, scallops, squid, red peppers, mushrooms, and garlic infuse the ingredients filling the crisp crunchy shaved potato based "bird's nest"
We didn't forget our vegetables! We had the Scallop and crabmeat gravy on garlic infused pea shoots. Simple, aromatic, savory and delicious.
We had the crab, so where's our lobster? Not to worry, the Fresh lobster with béchamel sauce on a bed of wonton noodles was not forgotten! Super indulgent velvety lobster infused white sauce bathes this perfectly cooked lobster. We always order a double order of noodles so we can eat all that yummy sauce
For those less seafood inclined, we also had the Crispy Chicken. A whole chicken is deep fried so the skin is a golden brown crisp and meat nice and moist, this was a tasty if hastily plated dish. The prawn chips were a bit of a hit and miss as some were obviously chewy and stale, while others were fresh and crisp
While there was a big pot of plain rice to go with our meal, we also had the Shrimp fried rice. Small chunks of shrimp, scrammed egg, peas and green onions dot the landscape of this lightly seasoned fried rice. You do get a big plate of it, but I was lazy and took a picture of the rice in my bowl
Next up was my dad's favorite, Freshly steamed tilapia. Sitting in a bed of sweetened soy sauce and infused with ginger and green onion oil, this fish was steamed to a tender moist perfection
the DESSERT
After all that food, we had the dessert of the day, which happened to be Red bean tapioca dessert. A simple dessert of red beans, water, sugar and tapioca pearls for a sweet finish tonight to a very filling meal!
the VERDICT
Overall, a great place for Chinese food, whether you're eating a little, or in our case - a lot!
