After a long day wave whomping, building sand sculptures, and wandering in the picturesque town of Lahaina, we have a craving for some honest, down to earth food. Lahaina Pizza Co. certainly fit the bill. We followed our noses to the second floor pizza/bar where its been voted by the locales several years in row to have Maui's best deep dish pizza. Snagging a coveted balcony seat with nice cooling breezes and a view of the sunset, the dimly lit dark wood bar with rustic touches, loud music in the back, its easy to see why this pizza place is a favorite hangout for the locales. Service is friendly, and the waitstaff always do the difficult task of digging out the first overloaded slice out of the deep pan to the ooohs and ahhhs as the cheesey strings stretch upwards.
the PIZZA
We order the equivalent of a meat lovers with lots of ground beef (lean, juicy and seasoned), sausage (succulent chunks with a spicy kick), ham (adds a nice smokey sweetness), mushrooms, onions, red peppers, more tomatoes and cheese. Did I mention the cheese? The deep dish pizza slice is about 2-3 inches thick and about a good inch of that is molten cheesey goodness. The slightly sweet and spicy tomato sauce is rich with garlic, basil and oregano. Mmmmmm.
And being tourists, we cheekily order a Hawaiian pizza as well. The sweet chunks of diced smokey ham bob in a gentle molten sea of pale mozzarella and is joined with bits of diced sweet golden pineapple, chunks of ripened tomatoes and a slightly sweet and tangy in house tomato sauce. Mmmmm.. the slice is so thick, you can either sink your face into it, or eat it with a knife and fork. The crust has a wonderfully crisp and crunchy exterior, and tender slightly tangy interior - and the crisp magically stays crisp throughout the meal despite the enormous amount of toppings on it.
the VERDICT
Well deserving of its reigning title of best deep dish pizza in all of Maui. Go sink your face into deep ooey gooey cheesey pizza goodness. Nom!
